Enkatsu dojo first began in 1997, Enkatsu means Harmony and this is one of our biggest aims.  Another is to provide a learning environment within a fun and friendly atmosphere.  We feel we have managed to a achieve this and hope you agree.

We are the first club in a fledgling organisation – Enkatsu-do Shotokai.  Enkatsu Dojo are members of Enkatsu-do Shotokai a national organisation with links around the world.  We are also proud members of the prestigious Dai Nippon Budo Kai a world renowned martial arts organisation dating back to Japan’s Imperial court over 2500 ago.

Shotokai, as with most martial arts originated in the east, comes from the pen name, Shoto, of the founder of modern-day karate, Gichin Funakoshi and Kai meaning association.

One of Master Funakoshis students was Harada Sensei who came to Britain in the early 70s and created the first karate club in Britain, Karate-do Shotokai (KDS).  The KDS grew from a small club to an international organization with many clubs around the world.  Many political differences arose within the organization, which finally led to a split, headed by 5th Dans, Billy Hagartey and Colin Reeves.  They went on to form the Shotokai Foundation.

Due to differences again between Billy, Colin and the other Dan grades within the Foundation a further split occurred and both Billy and Colin left.  Billy created Shoto-Budo and Colin the Shotokai College.  Since then to remedy any further splits we decided to ‘go it alone’ and try to remain friends with as many people as possible. Our highest grade within Shotokai is 5th Dan.  Master Funakoshi was graded 5th Dan and since then there has been no one with enough authority, or reason, to grade above this level
